Choosing an external IT team: Tips for selecting the right contractors

In today's business world, technology is an essential aspect of almost every company. Thus, it is becoming increasingly common for even small businesses to seek third-party IT specialists. While the availability of such experts is more widespread than ever due to the removal of regional and national barriers, the main issue remains how competent these contractors are.

At BGT, we have been active in IT systems integration since our inception. Our team of 15 professionals has a combined experience of over 15 years and has worked on international projects for leading technology companies. Our focus is on integrating software and hardware solutions for our customers and providing ongoing support. We specialize in assisting clients in developing their infrastructure so that it stays one step ahead of the needs of their customers.

While digital transformation is continually changing business needs, the criteria for selecting contractors for external teams remain typical and valid for any subject area. Here are our recommendations:

  1. Don’t be swayed by brand names. The big name of a contractor in a contract does not guarantee competence. Instead, ask to meet the specific people who will work on your project. A video call to discuss the product's functionality and business needs can help you make the right decision with 80% accuracy. If engineers fail to explain the details in a way that makes sense to you, constructive cooperation will be difficult.
  2. Determine your end goal. Before seeking a contractor, ask yourself what you want to accomplish. For example, deploying CRM may not be the best solution unless it aligns with your larger goals. Ask the contractor for their opinion on what would be better for your company, and assess their response to see if it aligns with your vision.
  3. Look for references. Find out who the contractor's previous clients were and ask to speak with the person who made the decision to involve them. This can help you determine if the contractor is client-oriented, reliable in terms of deadlines, and comfortable to work with.

Selecting an external team can be even more challenging than hiring a full-time specialist. While it's easy to assess a specialist's suitability during an interview, understanding the inner workings of an external team is more complex. Therefore, it's essential to treat the selection process with great care as it can ultimately determine the hands in which your company's infrastructure or software will end up.
